Founded in 1977, Brackenfield has been Harrogate’s Prep school for over 40 years. We are a small independent school for children from the ages of 2 to 11 where children are happy and cared for; we are an extended family.

Curriculum & Learning, Activities, Outdoor Learning and Community are the four areas of a powerful mission we use to focus our children’s achievements. Our actions, behaviours and attitudes are underpinned by the core values of Kindness, Honesty, Respect, Confidence, Initiative and Perseverance. As a result, children are not only academically able, they are also confident and caring individuals who become proud ambassadors for their school and their community.

We aim to support you as well as your children by providing flexibility. Our wraparound care includes before and after school provisions that can provide busy families with more opportunities within their own work and careers. We also have an enriching extra curricular program that includes a variety of activities from sports, dance, arts & crafts and computer coding. This provides the peace of mind that comes from knowing your children are happy and busy too.

Holiday time clubs offer enriching activities during non-term times that may help meet your needs further. And finally, children can start in our popular Nursery from their second birthday, continuing until they become the leading pupils of the school in Year 6.

Brackenfield is situated in the leafy Duchy conservation area of Harrogate which is ideally located for travel from Ripon and Knaresborough. Gateways is a small, highly successful independent day school for boys and girls aged 2-18 years situated in Harewood village, north of Leeds.

We believe in the numerous benefits that come with our size;  investment into keeping class sizes small, our subject offering wide and our facilities up to date is of paramount importance.

In our Prep School, the maximum class size is 18.  By being part of a whole school campus, our pupils have regular use of our fantastic school facilities, including a theatre, sports hall, dance and drama studio. In addition to this we have recently added a Prep art studio and a covered outdoor learning space.

We are proud to be regularly placed in the top ten schools nationally for Value Added. The reason for this is simple – small class sizes and a focus on the individual. This is further demonstrated in our examination results; in 2022, almost half of all GSCE grades were at grade 7 and above and 26% of all A Levels were awarded at A* grade.

At Gateways every child is known and thrives as a result.

Queen Mary’s is a thriving school welcoming girls from age 3 – 16 and boys from 3 – 8, set in 40 acres of beautiful grounds, with minibus services from Harrogate and across the region.

Throughout the school, academic excellence and exceptional extra-curricular opportunities are offered within a nurturing environment, where education is truly tailored to the individual.

Within Queen Mary’s Pre-Prep, the team creates a happy, homely, caring atmosphere that is educationally stimulating, challenging and exciting. With small class sizes, children grow in confidence, respect others and the team creates magical childhood memories.

Queen Mary’s is one of the few remaining schools where the gift of a traditional childhood is as equally prized as academic excellence; where river swimming sits comfortably alongside coding. The stimulating and varied curriculum is delivered by a dedicated team of staff who bring out the best in each child. Recent results saw 31% of entries awarded 8-9s (the equivalent of an A* or A**) and many girls move on to prestigious sixth forms and universities including Oxbridge.

In offering a vibrant range of opportunities each child can make their own story. Whether it is performing on stage or taking part in the UK Mathematics Trust events, playing on the new floodlit astro-pitch or riding at the award-winning Queen Mary’s Equestrian Centre, the team will help your children find out where their passions lie.

Queen Mary’s offers truly flexible boarding to encourage independence and help busy parents and some pupils like to weekly or full board.

Queen Mary’s would be delighted to welcome you to an Open Day, can offer an individual visit on a date to suit you or why not try a Stay and Explore session.
